I suppose it’s time I introduce myself.
Hi there, my name is Shakira (no, not the famous Colombian singer). I’m a London-bred foodie and wino who recently left British soil to pursue an MBA at Duke University in North Carolina. I’m having a great time exploring the US and writing about all it has to offer – especially the wine.
A brief note on my background: after graduating from the London School of Economics with a degree in political science, I worked in the financial services industry for two years. In 2014, I launched the wine app Grappled after spotting a gap in the market for a user-friendly, light-hearted and free tool that simplifies the world of wine (backstory here and here).
What started out as a fun hobby – and an excuse to drink wine – quickly turned into a real passion. Alongside other freelance writing work, I currently write a couple of articles per month on my blog. I also send out e-newsletters to my wine-loving friends; if you’re a wine lover, click here – I promise I won’t spam you.
So what’s Grappled all about?
You don’t have to be a wine aficionado to toss around words like “bouquet” and “tannin” at a party or on a date. But if you’re one of the 70% of Brits who bluff their way through their wine choice, or one of the 30% who don’t, here is an app for you. Grappled is a free food and wine pairing app designed to beat wine anxiety by helping you choose the perfect wine based on dish, cuisine, occasion or taste preference. In the seconds it takes to download, you will have the confidence to conquer any wine list. Available on iOS and Android.
